Cotgrave, a town in the county of Nottinghamshire, is located in the East Midlands region of England. It is within the borough of Rushcliffe and the centre of Nottingham.

The village’s name comes from the Old English personal name “Cotta” and “graf”, meaning grove, so Cotgrave translates to “Cotta’s grove.” Cotgrave as a village has ancient beginnings in the Iron Age. Archaeological digs have uncovered a 6th century Anglo-Saxon burial ground in the northern part of the village at Mill Hill. A Saxon church also existed prior to the Norman Conquest. Just slightly north of the village is a Neolithic circular monument and Bronze Age burial site.

Within Cotgrave, there are many historic structures still standing, including All Saints’ Church, which dates to the 12th century, with many later additions to the original structure. The church tower has eight bells. The church also played a significant role in the history of the village and England during the Bubonic Plaque outbreak in 1637, as it was the main safe food storage site for the area. There was a hole within the church wall that allowed villagers to pass their money through, at which point it was disinfected with vinegar by those locked in the church. The stone to cover the hole is still in the wall of the church.  All Saint’s Church is still an active Church of England parish. There is also a Roman Catholic and Methodist Church in Cotgrave, with the latter dating to the early 1800s.

The village was once the site of significant coal mining, mostly done at Cotgrave Colliery, opened in the 1960s. The mine closed in 1994. Cotgrave sits on the edge of the South Nottinghamshire Wolds and on the Grantham Canal, providing ample opportunities to enjoy the natural resources of the area. The former mining area of Cotgrave Colliery was transformed into Cotgrave Country Park with planted woodlands, lake, picnic areas, horseback riding trails, and nature paths.
