History of Clayworth

For much of Clayworth’s history, and until relatively recently, the village has relied on agriculture as its primary industry. Listed as “Clavord” in the 11th century Doomsday Book, in the past thousand years, Clayworth has consistently maintained a tiny population of never more than a few hundred people at a time. The village was at its most populous and bustling in the mid-19th century when handicrafts and retail trading were present.

Despite its small size, Clayworth offers several local landmarks including Wiseton Hall, a former holding of the Spencer family.
