The village’s name was recorded as Blisetune in the Saxon charter of 956 records. It was named after a Danish Soldier Blesi and the Anglo-Saxon word tun that means settlement. Right until early 2015 The Village was served by a railway station, tea shop, and a post office.

Hazelford Ferry

Although it is no longer operational, Hazelford Ferry is an important part of Bleasby, providing transportation over the River Trent, long before the first Gunthorpe Bridge was built in 1875. People take the ferry to avoid the expensive bridges at Nottingham and Newark as they travel to Lincoln and Cosette Grimsby.

Even before the end of the Second World War, the ferry no longer worked as a means of transportation but a recreational facility, what with its proximity to The Star & Garter public house, which is now a residential home for the elderly.

The only thing that is left of the ferry is on the North Bank – the winding gear that has been preserved.

Village amenities

St. Mary's Church - The local Parish Church dates from the 13th century and features an organ by Gray & Davidson that dates from 1863. British architect Ewan Christian restored the church twice – in 1853 and 1869.  

Glebe Field – An open field where many of the village’s events are held, such as the celebrations in 1815 to mark the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Today, it used for picnics, Christmas events, school fairs, and to celebrate special royal events.

Jubilee Ponds - Where you will find a walking route that parishioners and visitors enjoy. It has beautiful greenery and Bleasby flowers. The Jubilee Ponds was established in 1977 to mark and celebrate the silver jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.

Village Hall - This used to be a school built in 1855 until it became a Village Hall when it was secured for the parish. It is regularly used for Parish Council meetings and to host other community events.
The village has a bus and train service, and caravan sites for holiday or weekend homes.  

Trent Valley Way

This hiking route that extends between Alkborough and Trent Lock passes along Nottingham and the riverbank. It features both riverside paths and footpaths within the Nottinghamshire route and then links to various villages, such as Newark-on-Trent and Gainsborough, via various points of interest.
