Ninebanks is a small village that is located in the southwestern part of Northumberland. The Ninebanks Tower is made of sandstone and it is believed that it was used as a watchtower instead of a structure for defense. The reason for this belief is because the walls are very thin. The first of the four floors is now below the level of the road. 

Isaac Holden was baptized at St. Mark’s Church in Ninebanks in 1805 and he grew up to be a philanthropist and was active in the community. As a philanthropist, Holden was a tea seller and he also raised funds so that he could purchase a hearse for the community.  He had the hearse house built in Ninebanks and presented it to the community in 1856, which was a year before he died. In honor of Holden, there is a 36 mile circular trail which is called Isaac’s Tea Trail. A portion of this trail is located in Ninebanks.

All of the undeveloped high moorlands in the county are now protected as the Northumberland National Park.  The Ministry of Defense owns much of the land within the park and 23% of the park makes up the Otterburn Training Area. The training area is used to train 30,000 soldiers every year. Most of the training area cannot be accessed and the part that can be used is only available at certain times and only with permission. 

One of the most popular attractions in the county is Hadrian’s Wall Path and it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Most of the path is located close to the Hadrian’s Wall, which was built by the Romans as a defense wall.
