Kettering, a town in the county of Northamptonshire, is located in the East Midlands region of England. It sits on the River Ise.
Kettering has a long history and its name has seen different forms throughout the years. It was originally Cytringan, then Kyteringas, and Keterinigan. Kettering’s meaning is from the Anglo-Saxon language and means “the place of Ketter’s people.” The village’s history dates back to the Romans, with an early settlement located in the northern section of Kettering. Archaeological excavations have also revealed an early Saxon burial site. Kettering as a populated village occurred sometime in the 10th century and was mostly farmlands.

Kettering’s manor house and country estate, Boughton House, was originally built in the 17th century. It is described by many as an ‘English Versailles,’ because of the work and detail done on the house by Huguenot craftspeople. In keeping with the French style of the house, the gardens are also of French design. The house and gardens are open for tours only a few times a year, but the site hosts private events, weddings, and musical concerts throughout the year.

Within the village, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul is one of the more significant historic structures. The original construction of the church is not known, but its first documented priest arrived in Kettering in the mid-13th century. The village was a hotspot of religious activity in the 19th century during the Christian missionary movement, with William Carey and Andrew Fuller basing their missionary operations out of Kettering.

Kettering was the site of two industries for many years. Iron ore quarries were dominant in the town beginning in the 1860s and then Kettering later became well-known throughout England in the 19th century with a significant boot and shoe industry. Many of the largest shoe manufacturers were based in the Northamptonshire region including Dolcis, Freeman, and Hardy & Willis. The iron ore quarries closed in the 1960s. The footwear business declined in the 1970s and currently, only two small footwear companies still exist in Kettering.
