HISTORY

Evidences of a univallate hillfort as well as buried remains of a Bronze Age borrow were found in the north-east portion of the village. Castle Dykes, a Norman motte castle featuring three baileys, is located to the north of Castle Dykes Farm. A “room with a vaulted stone roof, and another room beneath and rudely carved stones with human figures on them” was found by workmen who were digging on the site of the castle in 1712.

The Domesday Book features an entry for Farthingtone but in the book the village is listed as Fordinestone. In fact, there are a lot of different medieval spellings for the village's name including Fardenston, Ferdingtone, Fardingestun and Fardyngton.

William the Conqueror gave Farthingstone to his half brother, the Earl of Moreton. The village belonged to the Fawsley Hundred.

Events

Farthingstone Foot Fest – an event for all walkers and runners. Organised by the Farthingstone Foot Fest Committee, this event starts and finishes at the village hall. The 2016 event will be held on Saturday, 4 June.

For this event, participants can cover the whole distance: over 26 miles that comprises two loops that form a figure eight and is made up of footpaths and trails with minimum use of the road. A half marathon is also available which is 26 miles in total and covers stretches of the Macmillan Way, Knightly Way and Midshires Way.
