Yafforth is a village and civil parish located in the county of North Yorkshire, in the upper eastern portion of England. The word Yafforth may come from Ea-ford, which means a ford in the river. It’s a part of Hambleton, a local government district of North Yorkshire. The B6271 is the easiest way to drive into the village, with Northallerton 1.6 kilometres away, and Scorton on the other side. At the last census count in 2011, there were 174 residents living in the village.

The River Wiske is the closest to town, and passes by the east side of the village. The Romanby Golf Course is located to one side of the town, between Yafforth and Romanby.

The Yafforth All Saints Church was built of stone in 1208, and has a tower to the side. It’s surrounded by green grass. It had an major rebuild in 1870.  There also used to be a Methodist church in town, but it closed in 1966.

There are records stating that in the early 19th century the town had two shops three brickyards, and a pub.

An old school building still exists in town. The Yafforth school opened in 1868, and closed by 1952. This building stands in the middle of the village. The Reveller Mews alley across the street derived its name from Reveller, a horse who was a winner in the 1818 St. Leger Stakes classic. Originally the pub was named after the horse, but this building is now a private residence.

Yafforth is mentioned in the Domesday book as a berwick, or outlying estate, in the royal manor of Northallerton. It used to be considered a part of the ancient parish of Danby Wiske, but became its own parish in 1866.  It used to be a “chapel of ease” to Danby Wiske, for those residents who lived closer to Yafforth, than Danby Wiske.

There is a historical mound at the north of Yafforth. This is Howe Hill, and is a Norman motte. This was a fortification of a wooden or stone keep, built on an earthwork called a motte, most likely to defend the river Wiske. It’s surrounded by a ditch, and has a courtyard inside. It was most likely built during King Stephen’s time, in the 12th century. What remains stands about four metres high. It still has part of a counter scarp bank, and some of the ditch. It’s believed that it was no longer used by 1198.

Once a year in the fall is the Yafforth Harvest Festival. There are several events for children and adults to enjoy. The field is decorated with plants and flowers, and there are several scarecrows set up.
