History

Located by the road between Wensley and Caperby, Redmire used to have a stone cross at its centre which was destroyed by lightning in 1849. The name of the village have existed over a thousand years ago and came from the old English words, “mere” and “hreod”, which means lake and red. Miners used to live in this village during the mid 1800s. It also has its own railroad station, the Redmire railway station and is the terminus of Wensleydale railway. The railway runs for 16 miles and connects the village to the markets and stations in the Vale of York, down in Leeming. There is also a public elementary school and a chapel in Redmire.

The 16-mile line links the village with the markets in Leyburn and stations down in Leeming in the Vale of York – all serviced by venerable diesel and occasionally steam locomotives making several return trips each day.
