Pateley Bridge is a small market town, known locally as Pateley. It lies on the River Nidd in Nidderdale in the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. It was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and home of the Nidderdale Musuem and the oldest building housing in England. Suffice to say that this market town may be small, but it has plenty to offer.

Pateley Bridge was first recorded in 1175 as Patleiagate, and its name changed over the centuries, but evidence shows of people living in the town during the Neolithic period. This means there were settlements in the area long before official names were a concern.
It was not until the Anglo-Saxon era that settlements were clearly established, following a pattern of scattered farms near the top of the hills and on the spring line. Before the Norman Conquest, the Archbishop of York acquired the land and built his manor Bishopside that extended from Wath to Wilsill. This explains why the name of the parish is High and Low Bishopside, instead of Pateley Bridge.
Following the disastrous events during the early 14th century — Scots Raids and bad harvest, the Archbishop granted a right to hold a market and fair in town to encourage trade. The market was held on Tuesdays where just about anything is sold, including an abundance of flowers in Pateley Bridge. The fair, on the other hand, is held every 8th of September, which is the Feast of the Nativity or the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As the population increased, the land was no longer enough to sustain the people’s needs, which is why they looked for other means to earn money. Quarrying and lead mining became one of the most popular options in Greenhow Hill. Mills, quarrying and breweries were provided by the Metcalfe family. The 19th century saw a major decline of these industries, until they all closed down in 1880s that resulted in a period of recession. The increase of tourism, however, gave Pateley Bridge a fighting chance and its regeneration continues to this day.
