Newby Wiske is a tiny village located on the northeastern side of England, in North Yorkshire. It’s also a civil parish and is located in the Hambleton district. The River Wiske flows past the village and is what gives the name “Wiske” to many of the villages that it passes through. The word Wiske or “wisca” means “a water meadow”.

Many of the local villagers will visit the local market town of Thirsk for groceries and amenities, which is eight kilometres to the northwest. South Otterington and Maunby are the villages closest to Newby Wiske, a little over a kilometre away. The total population for the village was only 216 residents, as of the 2001 UK Census figures. There are 81 dwellings in the village, with forty being detached houses.

Newby Wiske has also been a part of the manor of Kirby Wiske. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the manor belonged to the de  Maunby and de Holtby families. Later, the manor passed to the Saltmarsh family. By the 16th century the Willey family owned the manor.

The village used to have an old Methodist Chapel from 1814 but it’s long since gone now. There are other Grade II listed buildings in the village. Newby Wiske Hall is one of them and was built on the western end of Newby Wiske. This building still contains older parts from 1693, but most of the newer structure was built during the 19th century.

Newby Wiske Hall used to be a training centre for the North Riding Constabulary in 1954. In 1976, it became the North Yorkshire Police headquarters. The police has been currently moving to Alverton Court, where the Rural Payments Agency used to be in Allerton. The move should be completed by 2017. The Police intends on selling the Newby Wiske Hall site. This includes the original country house and many other later buildings.

Sir Hugh Smithson was born in Newby Wiske Hall in 1714. He was the first Duke of Northumberland. He lived from 1714 to 1786. He was a landowner and an art patron. He is currently buried in the Northumberland Vault at Westminster Abbey.

There is also an old Georgian house from 1824 in the village called Solberge Hall Hotel. This house was built in 1824 by John Hutton, who owned much of the land in the region. This house remained in the Hutton family for over 100 years. It was then purchased by Benjamin Talbot, who was an inventor. It’s since been turned into a hotel and restaurant.

Newby Whiske is conveniently situated near many neighbouring villages that have some great festivals in the summer time, including Hillside Festival in Thirsk, Whitby Folk Weekend in Whitby, and Northallerton Festival.
