Fearby in North Yorkshire is located two miles west Masham and five miles southwest of Bedale. This small village was first known as Federbi with a population of 8. The village was formed in 1866. It is unclear as to the meaning of the name Fearby, as the first part of the name origin is unknown. However, the second part of the word’s Norse origins, by, means village. It is possible the name could mean feather village or four villages. However, there was a group with the name Fearby in York, which could also be the origins of the name of the village .A Harrogate conservation council appraisal indicates that Fearby was settled by the Danish in the ninth century. Another interpretation of the name Fearby is Four Farmsteads.

Landmarks

Interesting landmarks in the area of Fearby include the Fearby Cross at the east end of the village. This circular stone with a post in the middle, stone cross, is said to be the point where five old roads meet. There is much speculation as to the significance of this piece, some of which include town proclamations and a point where funerals were stopped. Another interesting tidbit is the possible link to a druid origin, indicating that circles of upright stonesonce existed there in the area. No one knows for sure.

The Green in Fearby is located centrally in the village. While the Green lies in the middle of the village, its purpose in years past was as a common defense point for the villages which backed up to the green. The Green served as a central location where the villages could corral their livestock to protect them in case of an invasion. This is a typical medieval style village defense function. Fearby has always been known for its agricultural benefits and has remained a small village.

In 1994, Fearby was designated as part of the Nidderdale Area of Natural Beauty due to its flora, fauna, physiology and other natural components. The area is protected to conserve the beauty.
