Like most places in the UK, Catterick, North Yorkshire has breathtaking views that stretch for miles. Catterick, North Yorkshire dates back to the Roman times. Its name was derived from Cataractonium (Latin/Greek), which means “place of waterfall”. The spelling, however, is believed to come from a Celtic name which means “fortification”, which was partly supported by the Ptolemy map.

The manor was held by Earl Edwin during the Norman invasion, and later granted to Count Alan of Brittany. It passed on to more hands up to the 19th century, when the Lawson Family was lords of the manor. Catterick lends its name to the Catterick Garrison and Catterick Bridge.

The village is believed to be where the Battle of Catraeth happened, as mentioned in the Y Gododdin, a poem written in Welsh. It was fought between the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxon in Bernicia and Celtic British or Brythonic.

Culture and Community - With a population of just over 3000, Catterick is small by most people’s standards. Nonetheless, it has local businesses that cater to the needs of the locals and tourists alike, from takeaway stores to flower shops. It also has a post office, car service station, public house and a sports ground where football and cricket can be played. It has a radio station and a primary school that can accommodate around 250 pupils.

Places of Interest

Pallet Hill - Located just to the north of the village, this is where the earthwork remains of a motte and bailey castle is found. It is believed to have been built by King Stephen in mid 14th century, as a way to control the Great North Road. Today, it has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Another Scheduled Ancient Monument can be found on the south of the village, a small Roman settlement site and cemetery on Bainesse farm.

Killerby Castle - This is another motte and bailey castle built during the medieval times. All that is left of it are surviving earthworks. The Killerby Castle is just a mile to the south-east of the village.
 
If you’re looking for other sites to see, you can visit the nearby areas. A hamlet of Catterick Bridge is home to the Catterick Bridge Racecourse where a Sunday market is held. If you’re looking for souvenirs or flowers in Catterick to buy, this is where you should be. If you want to take leisure walks, you can do so at the old Roman Road of Dere Street.

Despite the small population, Catterick, North Yorkshire has several notable residents, who made it to the history books. John Catterick, for one, is known to have come from the village. He certainly has the last name to prove it. He held the position of a Bishop and was an important member of the court of Kings Henry the IV and Henry the V. Other notable personalities include Theopilus Lindsey, a minister and Theologian, and Alexander John Scott, a vicar in Catterick.
