Ormesby St. Michael, not to be confused with Ormesby St. Margaret, is a small village in Norfolk approximately 7.5 miles north west of Great Yarmouth and 16 miles east of Norwich. Ormesby Manor is listed as a historically significant 19^th manor house. It features an Italianate tower, among other details.

Great Yarmouth is often known simply as Yarmouth and lies on the coast of Norfolk at the mouth of the River Yare. Yarmouth has been an English seaside resort since 1760, as well as a major fishing port dependent on the herring fisheries. The town boasts two piers and a beach.

Yarmouth serves as the gateway from the North Sea to the Norfolk Broads.  Ormesby Broad and Ormesby Little Broad are both part of the Trinity Broads within the overall Broads system and Broads National Park in Norfolk. The Trinity Broads are on a tributary of the River Bure, but they are virtually undisturbed because they lack a navigable link to the main river system.

No motorized boats are allowed onto the Trinity Broads, but visitors can hire dinghies and row boats. Some parts of the system, such as Muck Fleet connecting the Broads to the River Bure, is too shallow even for these boats. Ormesby Little Broad is used for sailing model yachts and boats by remote controlled electric motors. The Broads are popular with anglers, as well.

The Broad system was created in the Middle Ages when local monasteries began to excavate the local peat lands to sell for fuel in Great Yarmouth and Norwich. The local Cathedral took 320,000 tonnes of peat from the land per year. As sea levels began to rise, the excavation pits began flooding. Wind pumps and dykes were constructed to try and avert the rise of the waters, but flooding continued.

The result was the typical Broads landscape seen today with wet woodlands, reed beds and grazing marshes. The resulting waterways are lock-free, attracting visitors including artists, fishermen, bird watchers and boaters. For the most part, only small boats are found in the Broads, but Edwardian trading wherries, electric and solar-powered boats are seen as well. 

Some of the Broads are also surrounded by fens, containing growing beds of sedge and reed. These plants from Norfolk have been used to thatch traditional homes for centuries. The Broads are Britain’s largest area of protected wetlands, making them home to a great variety of wildlife.
