History

Great Snoring is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it is called by its Saxon name, Snaringal Snarringes. Sir Ralph Shelton, who was lord of the manor in 1611, sold Great Snoring to Lord Chief Justice Richardson.

The Walshingham Poor Union was formed on 12 April 1836 and a new Walsingham Union workhouse was built in the village in the same year to accommodate more than 200 inmates. The workhouse was eventually closed and the building has had various uses since including a smallpox hospital in the 1930s. Although plans were approved in 1961 to convert the building into 35 flats, no work was carried out and the buildings were demolished.

There are a couple of interesting sights in and around Great Snoring which include:

·    Church of St Mary the Virgin – a Church of England parish church that is chiefly of Perpendicular style (exterior). The interior fixtures and detailing date back to the 12th to 18th centuries. The structure is Grade I listed.

·    The Old Rectory – adjacent to the Church of St Mary the Virgin. This is a two-storey brick and terracotta structure that was built around the late 15th to early 16th century as a manor house for the Shelton family. The house received Grade II* listed status in 1951.

·    Walsingham Abbey Grounds – contains the remains of an Augustinian priory that was founded in 1153. The priory was built on a site next to the Holy House. The area also features woodland and riverside walks.

·    Pensthorpe Nature Reserve & Gardens – located in the gorgeous Wensum Valley, there's lots to do in the area. One, you could watch various wildlife found in the more than 770 acres of woodland, wetland and farmland habitats.
