History

Clippesby is said to have Viking origins, as indicated by the “by” in its name. The saltwater lagoon that existed before the sandspit where Great Yarmouth now stands used to border the village and blocked the entrance to the North Sea. However, drainage by windpumps resulted in the creation of a rich agricultural land that settlers have depended on for years.

Clippesby Hall – a holiday park that was once home to Sir Clipesby Crewe, Chief Justice of England and first Recorder of Great Yarmouth. A second hall was built and it was owned by the Muskett family then purchased by the artist Peregrine Feeney; it was this incarnation that was used by the army in the Second World War but the upper floor went into disrepair and was demolished. Here, you have a range of accommodation options, such as cottages, lodges and apartments.

Clippesby St Peter – one of the 124 round-tower churches in Norfolk that still exists. It's located adjacent to Clippesby Hall. It was said to be frequented by John William Waterhouse.
