Ashill is a mid-sized village in the county of Norfolk in England. This is also a civil parish situated between the market town of Watton and the market town of Swaffham.

Ashill is not the original name of this settlement. It was once known as Asleigh which is a word used to describe the clearing in the Ash wood. The village centre is close to a duck pond and the green. People who wanted to reach Swaffham in the past would stop in Ashill overnight in order to rest and leave their cattle to enjoy on the green and drank water from the pond.

Ashill has a long history thanks to the terrain in which it is situated. It is perfect for agriculture and this was and is the main occupation for most of the inhabitants. Ashill was also mentioned in the Domesday Book where it was described as a very small village. According to some statistics there were 482 people who lived in Ashill in 1801 and this number increased to 700 in 1831. However, this number was going up and down in the next years. It seems that the current population of Ashill is the highest ever – 1.426 according to the last census.

Today, Ashill is a relatively modern village with shops, various amenities, school and many other things.

Ashill is located about 105 miles north of the capital city of London. Those planning to reach Ashill with their car will spend about 2 hours and 30 minutes driving via M11 road. They can also use the A505 road, but this will only make their journey longer. The closest train station is located in Kings Lynn where passengers can board a bus and get to Ashill.

The Church of St. Nicholas

This parish church dedicated to St. Nicholas was built in the 14th century although there is evidence of an older church that existed on this place. Of course, today, this church has many aspects from modern times. What is interesting is that the north windows have some of the glass placed there in the 15th century.

Oxburgh Hall

This amazing moated country house is located close to Ashill. It was built in the late 15th century and it now belongs to the National Trust. Many TV series and films were filmed on this location including You Rang, M’Lord, Dad’s Army, Love on a Branch Line etc. This is a Grade I listed building.
