The History of Tetford

During the time of the Saxons there were encampments in the area, near the grounds of Tetford itself. It was during this time that a famous Briton, Raengeires, defeated a Saxon army lead by Horsa in a large battle that took place in or near where the village of Tetford would be established.

Before the establishment of Tetford, there was a mill listed as Tesforde in which the town grew around as the 17th century watermill sits near the centre of the village itself. The White Hart Inn, parts of which actually go back to the 16th century, was once the meeting place of the Tetford Club which including Tennyson as one of its members. For many years, Tetford would be known for the fertilizer products it made from burnt limestone that is common in the area.
By 1714, the Edward Richardson Community Primary School was established thanks to the contribution of seven acres and the cottage of Edward Richardson. The school addressed the needs of the children in Tetford and nearby Salmonby for over a century until the establishment of the National School in 1821.

Over the years, Tetford has remained a sleepy, but beautiful village that has only garnered attention recently during the infamous floods of 2007 which managed to separate the village into two distinct sections for a short time. However, the village is now fully recovered and still sports its unique identity.
