Old Bolingbroke is a small village and civil parish that's part of the East Lindsey district in the county of Lincolnshire. It's situated in a valley in the Lincolnshire Wolds and is surrounded by several hills (including Horncastle Hill, Keal Hill, Hall Hill, and Kirkby Hill), many of which mark the village's boundaries. The village is located three miles away from the market town of Spilsby and six miles away from village of New Bolingbroke.

Old Bolingbroke in the Past

Old Bolingbroke appeared in the Domesday Book in 1086, although it was mentioned as “Bolingborg”. It had a taxable value of two geld units at the time, and it had 32 households (which was quite large in those times) as well as ploughlands, meadows, mills, and a church.

In the 12th century, the Earl of Lincoln William de Roumare built a motte and bailey castle in the area. A century later, a new castle was constructed on the present site by Ranulph de Blondeville, the Earl of Chester. The castle was passed on to several owners until it was acquired by John of Gaunt (the son of Edward III) through his wife Blanche of Lancaster, who was born in the castle. John and Blanche's son Henry was also born in it, and he became known as Henry Bolingbroke until he was crowned King Henry IV.

The Bolingbroke Castle was used by the Royalists during the First Civil War and became badly damaged when it was besieged by the Parliamentarians. The castle was pulled down after the civil war to ensure it won't be used as a military fortification by the Royalists.

Old Bolingbroke Now

Old Bolingbroke has retained its old-world charm. It's still a small village — the 2011 census revealed that it had a population of 325 people — which makes it the ideal haven for those who want to escape the noise and pollution of big cities.

Only the lower portion of the castle remains nowadays, but it's still worth a visit since you can see its hexagonal outline and marvel at its long history. You can also check out St Peter and St Paul's Church, which was built around 1363 and was said to be paid for by John of Gaunt.
