Hibaldstow, a village in the county of North Lincolnshire, is in the East Midlands of England. It is situated just south of the city of Brigg.

The village’s name is derived from a Northumbrian missionary who came through the area in the 7th century, St. Hygbald. Hibaldstow comes from the Old English of St. Hygbald and ‘stow’ to mean “place where St. Hygbald is buried.” It was known for many years as “Hibaldstowa” and appears in the Domesday Book as “Hibouldstou.”

Within the modern village boundaries is the site of the deserted medieval village of Gainsthorpe, located on the present property of Gainsthorpe Farm. The site consists of sunken roads and raised hollows and humps in the field and is overseen by English Heritage.  After the medieval settlement, Hibaldstow was founded as a Roman roadside fort on the road from Lincoln to the Humber, serving as a posting station. Significant archaeological findings have been discovered that date the village back to the late first century.

The village church, dedicated to St. Hygbald, was built in 1885 in the early English style and is an active Anglican church. Other historic structures within Hibaldstow include Hibaldstow Bridge, an iron arch bridge built in 1889, the historic Hibaldstow Mill, an 1802 windmill and watermill, and a number of older farmhouses and private dwellings dating between the 17th and 19th centuries.

The village is home to a Royal Air Force base, RAF Hibaldstow. The airfield was commissioned in 1941 and was home to the Boulton Paul Defiant Night Fighters, RAF Squadron No. 255. After World War II, the airfield closed for RAF operations and became a centre for parachute and skydiving, an activity that still continues there today. The site is now host to the British National Championships in skydiving.
