HISTORY

Listed in the Domesday Survey of 1086 as Griteford and Greteford, the village's name might be referring to the gravel (known as “grit”) ford located on the West Glen River.

The Glen River also plays a part in Greatford's history. It has flooded the village 30 times between 1880 and 1954. This was before the Greatford Cut was constructed in 1956 allowing excess water to be diverted from the Glen to the Welland without going through the village.

Greatford parish's underlying geology is sedimentary. Both the South and East is dominated by a Kellaways sand and siltsone mix while the North and West is mostly Kellaways clay deposit.

Greatford Hall – this was once the home of Francis Willis who became famous for treating George III for his mental illness. Originally, it was a manor house built by Elizabeth the I in the 16th century. This is where, in 1788, where Willis treated and “cured” King George III. Although the hall burned down in 1922, it was rebuilt to match the design of the original. Sadly, there is no public access to the hall.
