History

In the 12th century a castle was built in the village by Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln. The building was enlarged in the 14th century by Henry Beaumont who was given a licence to crenelate in 1312. The year 1372 marked the last documented record of the castle's occupation. It was described as a ruin in 1535 and it survived in that state until the Civil War. The building was later used a the village house of correction.

The village market place was used for stacking timber in the late 18th century. Sir Gilbert Heathcote acquired the estate from the third Richard Wynne who ran into financial difficulties and had to sell the manor. Heathcote had dreams of turning the village into a small market town and this vision involved clearing the market place and fitting it to be suitable for stage coaches that used the main London to Lincoln road.

Attractions

There are a couple of notable buildings located in the village, and these include:

·    The House of Correction. Folkingham was part of Quarter Sessions, the higher court in charge of dispensing justice in the area, during the early 19th century. This is why a house of correction (or a minor  prison) is situated in the village. The prison was built on the site of the Folkingham Castle. Today, it's a Grade II* listed structure with only the governor's house and gateway remaining.

·    The Greyhound. A building that became known in the 18th century when the village was a key staging post on the Lincoln to London stagecoach route. Today, it's a Grade II* listed building and was developed into luxury flats.

·    St Andrew's Church. This Grade I listed building features early Decorated Gothic arcades and a mainly Early English chancel. It's a prominent feature in the village.
