History

Canwick has always had connections with Lincoln, which is located about one and a half miles away. During the Middle Ages, the bishop of Lincoln owned a manor in the village and several other men with connections to Lincoln also owned several of the other manors.

Today, the village of Canwick is comprised of older houses which were mostly built by the Sibthorps (prominent merchants and gentry in Lincoln at the end of the 17th century), as well as the homes built for owner occupation.

There are a number of historical attractions in the village, and these include:

·    All Saints Church – a Grade I listed structure with a Saxon-era foundation. The church was improved upon by bishops who built the Lincoln Cathedral. All Saints sits on a Roman tesselated pavement and a coin of Constantine – the first Christian Emperor – was found in the churchyard.

·    Canwick War Memorial – stands on the grounds of All Saints Church. This was built in 1919 to mourn those “who crossed to the battlefields of Flanders and who entered the fiery furnace of Gallipoli, never to return.”

·    Canwick Hall – the seat of the Sibthorp family from the 17th century to the 20th century. The present structure was built around 1810. Members of the family include botanist John Sibthorp and a couple of MPs, including Colonel Sibthorp.
