Sutton Cheney is a small village located in the county of Leicestershire . The village is located in the east midlands portion of England. This small village has some history, and has a small population of around 538 people as recorded in the 2011 census.

Sutton Cheney is located close to where the Battle of Bosworth was held. Visitors can go to the Sutton Cheney Wharf, located on the Ashby Canal, in order to visit the battlefield. The Battle of Bosworth was the last notable battle of the Wars of the Roses. This was a civil war between the Houses of Lancaster and York that affected much of England in the 15th century.

The Battle of Bosworth was fought on August 22, 1485, and won by the Lancasters. Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond was their leader. Richard the III was the last king of House of York, and was killed in battle. This war overturned the House of York, and brought in the Tudor dynasty.

On March 22, 2015, King Richard III’s remains were moved to Leicester Cathedral. His funeral procession paused in Sutton Cheney.

People can enjoy taking narrowboat canal tours on Ashby Canal. The Ashby Canal runs along fifty kilometres of land, connecting Moira to Bedworth. The canal first opened in 1804 to create tramways to service local collieries. In 1846, the Midland Railway took over management. The use of the canal declined with industry by the late 1890s. Portions of the canal are currently being restored.

The village has one parish church called the Church of St. James’. The church has a clocktower and a pathway leading up to it that has tulips and other flowers on each side. St. James’ church was built around the 14th century. Richard III attended Mass in 1485 before the Battle of Bosworth.

From 1960 to 1986, Rev. E.R. Boston was a engineer who had a major interest in light railway and traction engines. He constructed the Cadeby Light Railway. Sadly, it’s no longer in operation. Much of the collection was sent to the Apedale Community Country Park in Newcastle-Under-Lyme.

There are some notable old buildings in the village, including two old coaching inns. They are called the Royal Arms and the Hercules. Old coaching inns were popular in England from the 17th to the 19th centuries. An inn was a vital part of the transportation network as travellers and workers all needed nightly rest stops. Coaching inns would also provide feeding and lodging for horses.

Thomas Simpson is buried in Sutton Cheney. He was a famous mathematician from the 18th century who invented Simpson’s Rule of mathetmatics. He lived from 1710 to 1761.
