HISTORY

Sapcote is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Scepecote. It comes from an Anglo-Saxon word for sheep or enclosure for sheep.

One of the earliest evidence of a settlement in town is the early Bronze Age occupation site that was discovered, as well as a Roman villa and bath house dating back to the 1st century AD. Others who have inhabited the area include Druids, Saxons, Romans and Normans.

The powerful Basset family called Sapcote home from the 12th to 14th centuries.

Sapcote Methodist Church – built by the Wesleyans in 1805. The stone used to build the church was quarried by the men who built it. In 1905, the church opened and is one of the finest examples from the Arts and Crafts period.

Red Lion – a pub with an old coaching inn feel. The Red Lion serves home cooked meals using home grown food.

Other historical buildings in the village include a bath house (built by John Frewen Turner), several thatched cottages, Park Farm, a timbre-framed house on Stanton road, the Old School in Leicester Road and the Stanley Burrough's Almshouses in Cooke's Lane.

Nearby Attractions

Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre & Country Park – a 15th-century battle site museum with a hands-on gallery, activities for children and guided battlefield walks. The battle site is where Richard III lost his crown and his life to the future Henry VII in 1485.

Kirby Muxloe Castle – also known as Kirby Castle. It's an unfinished 15th-century fortified manor house that was begun in 1480 by William Hastings during the Wars of the Roses.
