In John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, Oakthorpe is described as a hamlet in the Derbyshire parishes of Stretton-en-le-Field, Church-Gresley, and Measham. Today, Oakthorpe belongs to the civil parish of Oakthorpe, Donisthorpe, and Acresford in the north-west district of Leicestershire.

History

William the Conqueror gave several manors to Nigel of Stafford. Derbyshire was one of those given and Oakthorpe was included since it formed a part of that place until 1897.

Mining was the biggest activity in the village for a number of years. While it was a source of income, the mines were problematic. The sulphurous coal that lay beneath the village posed a threat of spontaneous combustion when exposed to just the right amount of air.

In the 1980s, Oakthorpe suffered from underground coal fires, resulting in houses and buildings becoming deformed or needing to be restructured. Some structures even had to be demolished because they became not fit for habitation. The mines did close down in the 1990s and measures were made to prevent future fires.

Attractions

There is a Methodist church in Oakthorpe that dates back to 1869. The village also has pubs and restaurants in case you want to pass the time or grab a bite to eat.
