HISTORY

An Iron Age settlement was uncovered to the north-west of Heather as part of an open cast coal mining application in 1990. The settlement was identified from the late 2nd century BC through to early second century AD.

Heather had a coal mine in 1874, but evidence shows there were coal works even before that. After coal mining, brick making was pretty much the industry in the 20th century.

Coal was mined again during the 1970s and 1980s with two open cast coal mines opened in the village. One of which, the Coalville Farm, was able to extract about eight million tons of coal between 1982 and 1996. The area was then restored and is now the Sence Valley Country Park.

UK Coal opened the Long Moor open cast coal mine to the north of the village after a 1990 British Coal application was rejected. Then again, the UK Coal operation was a much smaller scheme, and in the three years of operation, about 725,000 tons of coal was extracted. The Woodland Trust acquired the site and together with an adjoining agricultural land created the Flagship Diamond Wood, a new wood land in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
