Known for its Carboniferous limestone hill which rises 122 metres above sea level, Breedon on the Hill is located about five miles north of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. It adjoins the Derbyshire county boundary and it's only around two miles south of Melbourne, a town in Derbyshire. Breedon includes the hamlets of Tonge (on the east side of the village) and Wilson (on the north of the village).

HISTORY

Occupation of the area traces back to as early as 1st century BC and 1st century AD. This was determined when The Bulwarks, an Iron Age hill fort, was excavated in 1946. The name of the village is derived from the Celtic word “bre” meaning hill and the Old English word “dun” meaning hill as well. Basically, the current form of the village's name is the combination of three varieties of the word hill.

Four saints are said to be buried in the village, according to Medieval Hagiography Manuscripts. These include Friduricus (donor of the Mercian Royal Monastery that was built in town in the 7th century), King Eardwulf of Northumbria, and two Anglo-Saxon saints Beonna of Breedon and Cotta of Breedon.

A branch of the Midland Railway was built through the eastern part of town in 1874, as well as the Tonge and Breedon railway station at Tonge. However, these were closed in 1980 by British Railways and the track was later dismantled.

In the early 12th century, it was re-founded as an Augustinian priory. It  also served as a hermitage before becoming a monastery. Today, what remains of the priory include the many Anglo-Saxon sculptures, an ornate family box pew and notable Renaissance church monuments.
