Kirkcudbrightshire, also known as the County of Kirkcudbright, is a historic county located at the south-west of Scotland. It can be referred to as East Galloway since it helps form the larger Galloway region. Let’s jump right into a bit of its history!

The county where Kirkcudbrightshire is found today was first populated by a tribe of Celts. After the romans invaded in 79 AD, it became a part of their province: Britannia. However, as it so often happens with history, there are some things we’re not quite sure of. This supposed Roman occupation is one of them. Some people say the Romans only settled a temporary marching camp.

Whatever happened, when the Romans went away, no one knows what happened to the tribe of Celts known as Novantae. All we know is that by the 6th century, Galloway was already a part of what was known back then as the “Brythonic kingdom of Rheged”. Along the coast there are also sand dune areas where you can find many other species that fit this habitat, such as: Sea Holly Eryngium maritimum, Marram Grass Ammophila arenaria, Sea Rocket Cakile maritima, and more rare species like Coralroot Orchid and Lesser Twayblade Listera cordata.

There’s even a species which is of local priority: the Sticky Catchfly Lychnis viscaria and it can be found along the cliffs of the Kirkcudbrightshire coast. This plant is just beautiful! It has red flowers that spiral loosely forming clusters on the taller flowering stems. It also has long, lance-shaped leaves to accompany it.

These are just a few of the thousands of flower species you can find in the overall area of Kirkcudbrightshire. Its geology, with its coasts and green lands make it a beautiful place to visit and spend some time enjoying nature.
