Barham Court

In Teston, you can find the Barham Court which is now home to several offices and apartments. The structure was built in the 12^th century and was the home of Randall Fitz Urse who murdered Thomas Beckett in 1170. By the 17^th century, the Butler family which occupied the court supported the Royalists which led in part to the Battle of Maidstone in 1648. By the 18^th century, the court was passed to the Middleton family.

By the mid-19^th century, Thomas Martin began creating cricket balls in a workshop located above the town’s post office. His dedication eventually led to a factory that was built in 1927 which still produces cricket balls to this day. The church in the village is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul with one wall featuring a memorial table tot to Reverend James Ramsay. The Rector of Teston and Nettlestead from 1781 up to 1789, Ramsey worked for the abolition of slavery in England. Ramsey who served as a surgeon under a member of the Middleton family eventually went to the Caribbean island of St. Christopher where he saw the treatment of slaves and began dedicating his life to their freedom.

The River Medway

The one natural features that dominates the Teston area is the River Medway. The Teston Bridge crosses the river and has become something of a local landmark. It dates back to the 1740s when 14 locks were constructed to make the river navigable at that location. The result was that iron products could be shipped along the river from the Weald. The latest construction of the locks dates back over a century ago to 1911.

The Teston Bridge itself offers an adjacent twelve hectare meadow that provides the public with day ticket fishing and a continuous footpath along the bank of the river that includes the Medway Valley Walk and the Maidstone Millennium River Park.
