Swanley is a town in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, England. It was once known as a place to see lots of flowers in Swanley, hence the nickname “Home of Flowers.” It's also a designation that the Town Council has been inclined to revive, and is doing so through its “Swanley In Bloom” programme. Although it may be more of a commuter and distribution centre these days, there are still many wonderful things that can be enjoyed in the charming town of Swanley.

Swanley, in 1066, was just comprised of a few cattle farms that were surrounded in oak, sycamore, and ash woodland. It wasn't even mentioned in the Domesday Book – a manuscript that holds records of surveys completed in England and parts of Wales in 1086 – because it only consisted of a few homesteads.

It was believed to be a Saxon pig farm due to the origins of its name. It is said that “Swanley” is derived from the Saxon term “Swine-ley” where “ley” means a clearing in the woods while swine referred to pigs.

There were just a few homesteads in Swanley, but the arrival of the railway changed the life of the town. It became the location of the Swanley Horticultural College that opened in 1887, which led to horticulture being the predominant industry in town. This also led to the increase in local nurseries and florists' outlets selling Swanley flowers which led to the shortage of job opportunities on farms.

The facility also offers a couple of dry court sports options such as squash, badminton, and table tennis – just to name a few.

One of the best programmes in town is “Swanley in Bloom.” It is an initiative by the Town Council to improve the appearance of the Parish of Swanley during the summer and winter months. Apart from the impressive display of Swanley flowers during the summer months, the council also seeks to improve the parish through tree planting, bulb planting, and other initiatives.

There are lots of flowers in Swanley thanks to its more than 40 horticultural nurseries. There is also a set Swanley in Bloom local gardening competitions organized by the town council every summer.
