Located two miles downstream from the city of Canterbury in Kent, Fordwich is a beautiful and ancient town. Although it only has a few hundred inhabitants, it is designated as a town thanks to a Merchant Gild Charter granted by King Henry II in 1184. This charter reflected Fordwich's status as the de facto port for Canterbury.

Fordwich is known for fishing, particularly the Fordwich trout which Isaak Walton described in The Compleat Angler – published in 1653 – as “near the bigness of a Salmon.” That said, if you're a lover of fishing and would love to take a date out on a boat, this is one of the best places to be. HISTORY

AD 675 marked the first recording of the name of Fordwich. That time, it was forduuicum which meant village by the ford. King Lothar granted St Augustine's Abbey land at Stodmarsh “near Fordwich” and by the 10th century St Augustine's was recognised as the owner.

The location of the town is on the highest navigable point on the River Stour. Heavy goods meant for Canterbury were shipped upriver to Fordwich for thousands of years. One of the most important cargo to ever pass the town was the Caen stone used by the Normans to rebuild Canterbury Cathedral.

Today, Fordwich is in legal terms a civil parish. It also retains its ancient links with the Cinque Ports and is also a limb of its head port, Sandwich.

The river trade still continued until the mid-19th century even though the Stour silted up.

LANDMARKS

Church of St Mary the Virgin – now redundant, but still open to the public. It's currently in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church has part of the carved sarcophagus said to have contained the remains of St Augustine of Canterbury.

Watergate House – the building right next to the Town Hall. This 16th-century structure was the family home of John and Gregory Blaxland who were 19th-century pioneers of Australia.

Town Hall – a Grade II listed property built in 1544 during the reign of King Henry VIII. Meetings are held here and the building can also cater to weddings and similar ceremonies.
