HISTORY

Aldington is a parish that is rich in history: it has over 50 buildings that have historical or architectural interest. One of the Archbishop of Canterbury's palaces used to be located beside the church but now, only ruins remain. The manor house used to be Court Lodge Farmhouse and in 1540, Henry VIII bought and extended the house, park and chase.

Aldington became the stronghold of The Aldington Gang – an infamous group of smugglers that plied their trade in the marshes and shores of Kent – after the Napoleonic Wars. The gang's leaders – Cephas Quested and George Ransley – were natives of Aldington and made their headquarters at the Walnut Tree inn.

The Aldington Knoll was used as a viewpoint for the Anglo-French Survey which linked the Royal Greenwich Observatory with the Paris Observatory.

St Martin's Church – dates back to the 12th century. The church is done in Perpendicular style and it's tower – which dates back to the 16th century – was used as a landmark by seamen.
