HISTORY

In 1995, a large midden pit at Staosnaig on the east coast of the island was found to have thousands of burnt hazelnut shells. The discovery provided insight into the communal prehistoric activity on the island.

The lairds of the island during the 18th century were the Macneils, including Archibald Macneil. The family built the Colonsay House in 1722 but the house has been in the property of the Barons Strathcona – the island's later owners – since 1904.
