The History of Bodffordd

The age of the settlement is not clearly known since relatively few records have been kept. However, it was once known as Bodffordd Esgob with the term Esgob meaning that it belonged to the Bishop of Bangor in this particular circumstance. Villages with the term Esgob at the end meant that they were owned by a bishop of some sort.

Life in the village revolved around a windmill that was located just north of the community and all the related trades that came with it. Today, the windmill is now a private residence with only some of the features still remaining. While the windmill itself seemingly dates from the 18th century, it was reportedly still in use until the 1930s.
The drovers road passed through the village that went to the Llangefni market. So, it was common for the people of the area to go to the market on days in which they were not working. Today, many of the older dwellings that make up the history of the town and the drovers road have crumbled or have fallen into a state of disrepair. However, St. Llwydian’s Church is still in very good condition and a wondrous site in the community.

There are few facilities in the village apart from the village hall, primary school, MOT garage, computer workshop and electrical outlet. Interestingly enough, Bodffordd was the host of the 2007 Anglesey Eisteddfod which is considered quite an honour for the community.
