Laide is a tiny village of 120 people, located in the upper northwestern portion of the Highlands of Scotland. It’s located on the southern side of Gruinard Bay. The nearest village is Ullapool, about thirty kilometres away. You can get to Laide by the A832 road. Laide is derived from Scottish Gaelic “An Leathad”, meaning the broad ridge.

This small village has some amenities, including the Ocean View Hotel, recently reopened, a shop, post office, campsite, petrol station, a bed and breakfast property, and the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

The ruins of the medieval chapel of Laide are found overlooking Gruinard Bay. Little more than two stone walls remain over a grassy meadow. One of the walls has a small window, and there is a commemorative plaque on site. People are blocked from walking between the walls. There are also gravestones on site.

Laide is a popular tourist destination in the summer time. Now that the Ocean View Hotel has reopened, customers have a play to stay, as well as a restaurant to visit. There is a pool table, table tennis, and darts, and video games and pinball for the younger crowd. A bouncy castle is set up outside for the children, and there are outdoor film nights for everyone to enjoy.

Right outside of Laide is Laide Community Wood. This forest is owned by the local community and it’s considered a recreational facility that is open all year round. The woodlands were purchased in February 2002, for £72,000. There was only a short amount of time, but the funds were raised in time. There was a lot of competition from other buyers, but Laide won the bid. The idea was to have the community manage and own the woodlands for the community’s benefit. Laide Community Wood is considered a charitable organisation.

There are many activities to be enjoyed in Laide Wood, from fishing to special themed walks. There are also special interest days, and other events throughout the year. Dragonfly Days is an popular event where residents learn about the variety of species in the wood, and they can explore their natural habitat. People can choose to sponsor-a-tree, which aids in the replanting of clear-felled areas of the wood which were lost during the storm of 2005.

From Laide you can see beautiful views of Gruinard Island and the Summer Isles. There are also many beaches to visit, including Gruinard, and Mellon Udrigle, all a short five minute drive from the village. Gairloch is also about a twenty minute drive away.
