Located just east of the River Nairn in the Highland Council Area that is part of Scotland, the little village of Auldearn sits near the northern coast. The name comes from the castle built for William the Lion of Eren back in the 12th century.

Although relatively small today at roughly 550 residents, the village itself is growing thanks to the considerable development over the past decade. You can find a small garden called Rose Gardens where many of the residents gather to talk, play, and entertain. From nearby Castle Hill, you can see all the area for miles around. There is a Post Office and a primary school in the village, but little else apart from the houses and basic structures.

History

The history of the village goes back at least to the 12th century, although nomadic tribes had been in the region for thousands of years prior to its settlement. Apart from the construction of the castle, the most notable event was the Battle of Auldearn which was fought in May 1645. The MacLennans who were part of the Covenanters fought against the Royalists and were defeated. Montrose, who led the Royalists were supported by the Clan Donald and the exploits were recorded in a waulking song.
The next notable event for the village occurred in 1662 with the trial of Isobel Gowdie and two others for witchcraft. The court records revealed that she described in detail her activities along with the coven she helped create. Although it is assumed that Gowdie and her two compatriots were executed, there are no records that it actually occurred.

Points of Interest

While Auldearn is not exactly a tourist mecca, it does offer a few points of interest that make for the perfect stop if you are touring the northern part of Scotland. The Rose Gardens, located in the middle of the village, was refurbished in 2003 and features flowerbeds, a small shelter, and benches that make for the perfect area to picnic.

There is also the Doocot, located on top of Castle Hill, it is a pigeon loft that was first constructed back in the 17th century. There are many hundreds of small areas for pigeons to roost, so naturally they took up home at this location. It was used by the Dunbar family in case they ran short of food during the winter months. Today, the National Trust of Scotland looks after the roost.
