Lying on the route of the original Great North Road, Welwyn – an ancient village in Hertfordshire – is just about 25 miles north of London. It's path is close to the A1 motorway and is bisected by the River Mimram which crosses the high street.

Welwyn is often times called Old Welwyn to distinguish it from Welwyn Garden City, which is located to the north of the town but is different from the town it took its name from.

HISTORY

During the Roman times, Welwyn was on the major road between St Albans and Colchester. In fact, an excavated bathhouse to a Roman villa can be seen in a vault located under the A1 motorway.

Welwyn became a posting station during the 16th century where coaches changed horses and travellers were greeted with hospitality. In fact, Edward Young the Rector tried – albeit unsuccessfully – to turn the village into a fashionable spar.

Due to opposition by landowners, the railway never came to the village. It passed a mile and a half to the east of the Welwyn Viaduct, which was opened in 1850 by Queen Victoria.
