Manor

A manor of Northaw is mentioned which was let early in the 14th century by Abbot Hugh. The St Albans Monastery held the manor until the dissolution of the abbey in 1539. It reverted back to the crown and the king at that time granted the manor to William Cavendish and his wife Margaret who held it for 12 years.

After Cavendish, a succession of owners took possession of the manor, including William Eart of Pembroke (40 years); Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick; Anne, Dudley's wife and daughter of Francis Lord Russell, Earl of Bedford; and William Lord Russell of Thornhaugh, brother of Anne, and his male heirs.
