Beautiful Hunsdon village in Hertfordshire is best known for its collection of many old houses, some known to date back to at least the 15th century.  While there are no homes known to date further back than this, it’s speculated that at least a few of the hall houses are probably older.  This is mostly believed because Hunsdon was registered in the Domesday Book in 1086.  

There is a great deal of beauty to see in Hunsdon.  The village centre contains the Village Hall, which used to be the village school before a new one was build up the road.  This building was originally thought to belong to the Harlow family in the 15th century.  It overlooked Harlowes Green, which was one of the five Greens in the Parish, which is now the Village Hall car park, and a War Memorial.  Beyond this village centre are a wide variety of beautiful houses, such as White Horses, Netherhall and Rose Cottage, which was previously called Ivy Cottage.  

When visiting Hunsdon, a sight that is not to be missed is Hunsdon Church.  It’s believe that the church dates back to the 11th century, as there are records showing that there was a priest living in Hunsdon at the time.  On the north wall are frescos showing the seven deadly sins—beautiful and grand to behold.  The rest of the church was added in different centuries, and even contains railings that are the same as those around the tomb of Mary, Queen of Scots in Westminster Abbey.  These can be found at the standing monument to Sir Thomas Forster, who died in 1612.

Lastly, no visit would be complete without seeing Hundson House, which is to the east of the church.  Though it was built in the 15th century, the house and the parks were in The Crown’s possession by the 16th century.  Henry VIII rebuilt the house into a gorgeous palace and spent a great deal of his time there hunting deer.  After, Queen Elizabeth I gave the house to her cousin, Sir Henry Carey.  Archaeological work around the house has revealed a great number of interesting finds, such as an old moat with many old shoes found inside.  Likewise, many attempts to landscape the area have revealed early structures, leading to an end to many gardening activities.
