HISTORY

Lingen is believed to be occupied since the Middle Ages due to the presence of medieval strip lynchets near the village. Evidence also suggests a motte and bailey castle used to be in Lingen because it has been suggested that there was a stone keep in the village. Additionally, a 12th-century gatehouse with a curtain wall is said to be around the bailey.

It is said that the name of the village is of Celtic origin. The village's name means “place of sparkling water.” The Lingen family were lords of the manor until the 17th century.

The Limebrook Priory, which was a nunnery, was founded prior to the reign of Richard I. It was founded by either Ralph de Lingen or a Mortimer. The priory existed until the dissolution of the monasteries. Today, only a single ruined building remains.
