HISTORY

Burghill is mentioned in the Domesday Book, which was compiled soon after the Norman Conquest. In that book, the village's name was spelled as Burgelle. That changed in 1169 as it was listed as Burchil in the Pipe Rolls. Another spelling change is recorded in the Red Book of the Exchequer in 1212 where the village name is spelled Burghulle. The current form of Burghill has been used for the last eight centuries.

There is a suggestion that the first castle to be built in England was located in Burghill. As such, it had to be built before the Norman Conquest, which is around 1051. It is said the castle was built by the Normans in the service of Osbern Pentecost, a follower of Ralph de Mantes and a supporter of Edward the Confessor.
