HISTORY

Hawley first appeared in written records in 1248 in the Compotus de Crundal where its name was spelled in various forms such as Halely, Halle, Hallee and Hallegh. In documents related to the Foundation of the Chapter of Winchester AD 1541-1547, the village's name was spelled Hallie and Halley.

The name of the village is taken from the Old or Medieval English Healhleah or Healhaleah which means “clearing or meadow of the nook(s).”

Holy Trinity Church – a Gothic Revival church built in 1837. It si a Grade II listed structure.

Hawley Lake – located about two miles south-west of the village. Alternatively, those who love walking can get to the lake through a 20-minute walk from Hawley Green. British Army use the lake to train troops in basic sailing. Apart from that, Hawley Lake has a private boating club and it's also where you can enjoy a series of water-based activities.
