Flower Delivery to Hannington with Clare Florist

Lying between Basingstoke and Newbury, Hannington is a village on the top of the Hampshire Downs. It's also no wonder why this village offers such lovely views: it's in the North Wessex Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Test Valley lies to the south and the Thames Basin to the north. Hannington is isolated within the landscape. The nearest village is Wolverton and they are separated by about two miles of open countryside.

Those with romantic notions will surely love the serene views and the quietness of this village. You can even send flowers to Hannington to make the occasion even more special.

HISTORY OF HANNINGTON

Hannington comes from the word “Hanningtun” which means “farm of Hana.” During the time of the Domesday Survey, the Bishop of Winchester held Hannington.

John Pontoise, the Bishop of Winchester, gave the manor to the Prior and Convent of St Swithun in 1284. It then became a part of the manor of Manydown. The convent retained ownership of the village until Henry VIII granted it to the Dean and Chapter of Winchester.

The manor was sold into lay hands by the mid-17th century. The manor of Hannington Lancelevy and the manor of Hannington were the two manors that evolved out of Manydown. It was the latter that became a parish in its own right while the former was within the parish of Kingsclere. The southern boundary of the church marked the divide between the two. Because of this, parts of the village were in Kingsclere Parish until the 1890s.

IN AND AROUND HANNINGTON

Basing House – once the largest private house in the country. It was home to William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester and a very powerful courtier. Royals such as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I visited this place.

Apart from touring the estate, you can also have a picnic in the Jacobean garden. You can also turn this into a romantic affair by presenting some Hannington flowers to your date.

Willis Museum – for learning about Basingstoke and Deane's history.

West Berkshire Museum – features regularly changing exhibitions from individuals and community groups.

The Vine at Hannington – The only public house in the village. Offers views of the Hampshire Downs and is a stopping point for hikers who follow the Wayfarer's Walk. The land the pub stands in once belonged to the estate of the Duke of Wellington.

You can even celebrate a personal occasion in the pub if you want. Be it a birthday celebration or an anniversary, you can always enjoy a traditional home-cooked meal here. Of course, don't forget to pick some flowers in Hannington to give to the one you're with to mark the event.

HERITAGE ATTRACTIONS

All Saints' Church – dates back to the 11th century, but has modifications from the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 19th centuries. The present nave here is of Norman origin, but has traces of earlier Saxon fabric.

Laurence Whistler designed and engraved two modern windows in the church, one on the south aisle dedicated to local farmer William Whistler and another on the south side of the chancel in remembrance of Rose Hodson depicting the house she lived in for 22 years.

The spire of the church is a significant landmark.

Manor Farmhouse – a Grade II listed building from the early 18th century. The north facade is symmetrical and has red brick walling done in Flemish bond. This structure is located to the west side of the church.

Dickers Farmhouse – another Grade II listed building from the 18th century that had some alterations done in the 20th century. This is yet another building constructed of red brick done in Flemish bond.

Hannington Farm complex – comprised of a large 18th century barn and a 19th century granary, both of which are Grade II listed properties.

Church Cottage – simple in appearance, but plays a key part as it's in a central location between the village green and the church.

Lark Hill & Rose Cottage – two buildings that front the main road with the former constructed in the 20th century.

Tan-y-Bryn Cottage – the oldest cruck frame cottage in Hampshire.

Hannington House – from the early 19th century and Grade II listed.

Bertha's Cottage – a Grade II structure lying in the eastern entrance to the Conservation Area.

Pixie Cottage – another Grade II listed structure.

Whether you love history or you enjoy the countryside, Hannington sure has lots to offer you.
