HISTORY

Formerly called Crokeham, Crookham Village has a history dating back to the Domesday Book. However, Crookham Village and Church Crookham weren't separate entities until 1840 when the Christ Church was founded. Incidentally, this is the church for which Crookham is named after.

Church Crookham then became largely subsumed in the urban dormitory town of Fleet. On the other hand, Crookham Village, which lay across the Basingstoke Canal, maintained a much more rural setting.

The centre of the village evolved around scattered ancient cottages, several of which has timbre for frames. Crookham was once known for brick making and potteries and it was here that red ware of the flower-pot type were produced.

Every Boxing Day, a traditional Mummers play is performed outside two public houses, as well as on the village green.

A wharf existed at the location of the historic former Chequers public house, which has now been rebuilt and renamed The Exchequer.

The Fox and Hounds, a village pub, was the host f the Fleet Folk Club from the 1960s until 2001, when redevelopment work begun.

The third pub in the village is called The Black Horse.

An old house located in the south-west of the village was once King Henry VIII's holiday home. This was where he stayed during the hunting season to look for deer.
