Caernarfon is recognised as being a Royal town in Wales and it has a population of around 9,000 people. The town lies on the A487 road and is located close to 9 miles from Bangor. While the town has been known under the Anglo names of Carnarvon and Caernarvon, the official title of the town is Caernarfon.

The name of Caernarfon is said to originate from Roman fortifications and it has a rich history. Back in 1221, reference to Kaerinaforon was made in a charter in Anglesey and other references from around this time noted Kaerenarvon and Caerenarvon. It is therefore fair to say that the town was of interest and importance back in these times.

One of the most important elements of Caernarfon was Caernarfon Castle, which was constructed by Edward the 1st. This castle has sometimes been regarded as a symbol of the English dominance over the Welsh. In 1284, Caernarfon was declared to be a borough but it wasn’t until 1963 that it was declared to be a Royal Borough. This lasted until 1974 when the Borough was abolished in accordance with the Local Government Act of 1972, with the community which replaced it being granted the title of Royal Town.

There was a railway station in Caernarvon from 1852 all the way through until 1970 when it was one of the last passenger stations to be closed under the Beeching orders. There is a newer railway station in Caernarvon which is located in St Helens Road, although bus and car travel is the preferred mode of transport for many within the local community. There is a Caernarvon Airport, which is found around 4 and a half miles from the town and it contains a museum as well as offering pleasure flights. Although not a location for holiday flights, this airport is a popular attraction for locals and tourists in the area.
