What better way to appreciate the town’s history than to take a peek into its past. Blaenau Ffestiniog is known to the world as a historic mining town of slate. With the abundant resources still available to this day, it could have remained a highly developed slate industry.

Before the height of slate mining, the region now known as Blaenau Ffestiniog was a farming region. There are historic farmhouses at Cwm Bowydd, Gelli, Cefn Bychan and Pen y Bryn that survived to this day, providing proof of what the town used to be before 1750.

Everything changed upon the arrival of the slate industry from 1750 to 1850. During this period, Blaenau Ffestiniog was developed to support workers in the local mines, and became the largest town in Merioneth. Houses were built near the quarries, and around 1801, new roads were built for the benefit of the quarries. By 1851, Blaenau Ffestiniog became a new town. The rapid boom of the slate industry, however, was followed by a huge decline. By 1950, the very few quarries that survived eventually closed.

The good news is the tourism industry boomed thereafter. Blessed with miles of mountain landscape, various lakes and beautiful flowers in Blaenau Ffestiniog, among others, it soon became a popular destination.
