West Ham is a region of Greater London, England. It’s in the London borough of Newham. The western part of the neighbourhood is post-industrial, with the London Olympic Park nearby. In the east is the residential neighbourhood, with Victorian terraced buildings, among high-density social housing. The region is being revitalized, with more money being putting into redevelopment. Plaistow is nearby, and is also being revitalized. West Ham is located east of Charing Cross.

The name West Ham was also used by the West Ham United F.C/Football Club, and the West Ham Church School. The football club is nicknamed “The Irons and the Hammers”. It was actually the Thames Iron Workers who formed the first football company in this area. They used to play at the West Ham Stadium, which held over 120,000 spectators. They also had greyhound and speedway racing. The stadium was closed in 1972, but you can still see the housing development place names that pay homage to many of the former players.

Next to football, rugby is the next popular sport, with three current teams located in the area. They play on Holland Road.

The All Saints’ Parish Church is located in this area. It features a tall square tower with cathedral windows. This church dates back to over one thousand years. It’s also known as the “Cathedral of the East End”. King Henry the VIII and Anne Boleyn used to visit here. It’s said that Charles Dickens set his watch to the accurate time of the clock tower, which was the prototype to Big Ben at Westminster.

The early Anglo-Saxon charter of 958 recorded a settlement called Hamme. The next record was found in the Domesday Book, which listed it as Hame. Then, in 1186, it was recorded as Westhamma. Hamm is Old English which means “dry area of land between marshes or rivers”. The settlement was found between the boundaries of Lea, Thames, and Roding rivers and marshes.

In 1867 West Ham was a large parish that encompassed eighteen kilometres. The parish was divided into three different wards: Church Street, Stratford-Langthorne, and Plaistow. West Ham was in the Church Street Ward.

It’s easy to travel around West Ham. The nearest Underground Station is the West Ham Station on Manor Road. The National Rail and Docklands Light Railway also stops here.

West Ham Park is open to the public, and is located on over seventy-seven acres of space. It’s been managed by the City of London since 1874. Ham House used to be on site, and it was owned by the Gurney family. The house was taken down in 1872.
