In the north area of Greater London you’ll find West Green which is part of the London Borough of Haringey. This is an inner suburb that is just short of 6 miles north of Charing Cross. The region itself is dotted with residential neighbourhoods that include the parks of Chestnuts and Downhills. This part of London is defined to the north and northeast areas by Downhills Park, Cornwall Road to the east, Harringay and Stanmore Roads to the west, and Stanley and Cranleigh Roads to the south.

The History of West Green

Although there was plenty of movement through the area over the centuries from the ancient tribes that first settle Britain to the Roman occupation and up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the first actual account of the foundation of West Green was recorded in 1393 as a small settlement firmly in the Middle Ages.

Over the next few centuries, the town grew in fits and spurts until the 1600s when the eight buildings that stood in the village created the only hamlet in the region, located around the manor of Tottenham. While the area itself did not grow much over the next two centuries, by 1840 the village contained 18 houses and became one of the larger settlements in the area.

The size of West Green was important because it was considered bigger than Wood Green at the time which helped attract more residents during the 1860s. This was spurred by the arrival of the Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway in 1878 that gave a substantial boost to the region. The interest in West Green was further heightened by the 1874 book Above Suspicion by Charlotte Riddell who described the changes that occurred in the area.
The area which had been mostly rural in nature and unlike burgeoning, urban London which was not far away suddenly grew considerably as people were attracted to the area. It was not long before churches and taverns started filling the area along with houses. By 1890, the urbanization of West Green was complete and it was not recognizable to its former rural trappings.
