The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is a region located to the east of the City of London, and north of the River Thames. Over 284,000 people live in this region. The Borough also comprises the West India Docks and Canary Wharf, and is near the Tower Bridge. Some of the tallest buildings in London are located in the south side of the borough. This community is comprised of businesses and residences and is also called the East End of London.

There are twenty-nine different areas within the borough, including Canary Wharf, Bethnal Green, and Spitalfields. The Isle of Dogs has been formed from lock entrances to the West India Docks and part of the River Thames. The Thames Barrier keeps the river from flooding. It’s believed that the name Tower Hamlets was first used in the 16th century. A Constable from the Tower of London was responsible for commanding the Tower Hamlet Militia. The Hamlets had to pay taxes to the militia in 1646.

There used to be a negative connotation to the East End of London in the 19th century, with great poverty and overcrowding, but with development over the years, including the financial towers and historical attractions, it continues to change.

During the 19th century, the East End was characterized by villages that were dotted around the City walls, or that flowed along the main roads. During this time there were still farms in the borough, and marshes along the river. The Thames was popular for the shipping trade, and for the Royal Navy. Originally, shipping was deposited in the Pool of London, until formal docks were built in the Borough. The region attracted a great number of people seeking employment, and had a high percentage of immigrants than in other regions of London.

By the 20th century there were attempts to address the overcrowding in this region with new housing, and the dispersal of the population to new suburbs.  

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is located in the Tower Hamlets. It was built for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It includes the Olympic Village and other sporting venues such as the Olympic Stadium, London Aquatics Centre and London Olympics Media Centre. There are many pedestrian pathways for the public to enjoy, that flow with the landscape design. There has been some criticism for the lack of planting and gardens that could fill up the space.

Every year the London Borough of Tower Hamlets is host to a variety of festivals for adults, family, and community. The Roman Road London Festival has been held for a couple of years with sporting games, markets, stalls and art.
