Flower Delivery to South Wimbledon, London
Located in the London Borough of Merton in southwest London, South Wimbledon forms the north-eastern section of the parish of Merton along with the parish of Wimbledon that is located in the north. On an Ordnance Survey map of 1876, it was marked as a New Wimbledon, and on a map of 1907 as South Wimbledon. Its name, however, was derived from Wimbledon to the north, a suburban district of South West London.
In 1907, the parish became the Merton Urban District and was later renamed in 1913 as Merton and Morden. Since 1965, it forms part of the London Borough of Merton.
South Wimbledon is a multi-cultural area where immigrants from North Africa and Poland make up the local workforce. Together with the locals and other races, the entire population provides a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It is likely that travellers exploring the parish and smelling the flowers in South Wimbledon, so to speak, is sure to find and meet people similar cultures even when they are miles apart location-wise.
What is even better is that finding accommodation in the parish is fairly easy and affordable. In fact, it is in the area where you will find some of the cheapest options available, although the place has a rougher feel compared with the Wimbledon town centre. There is no reason to be scared of, however, since Merton has the lowest crime rate in the whole of London.
A significant symbol of the urban development in South Wimbledon is the South Wimbledon tube station. As of 2013, it has an annual entry and exit of 3.79 million. It is connected to several routes of London buses — 57, 93, 131, 152, 219 and 470. The night route N155 also serves the station. When heading out to Wimbledon to the north, however, taking the northern line is the best option. From Wimbledon, you can then take the train to the City of London.
The tube was opened on 13 September 1926 as part of the City & South London Railway and the Morden extension. Based on the original plan, its name was Merton Grove, but was shown as South Wimbledon (Merton) for geographical accuracy. The building's design holds major significance. Made by architect Charles Holden, it was his first major project for the Underground. He was chosen by the general manager of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, Frank Pick, after he was unhappy with other designs that were submitted by in-house architect, Stanley Heaps.
The design features a form of double-height box clad, three-part glazed screen on the front façade, and a version of the Underground roundel that is three-dimensional. This Grade II listed building was built with shops flanking it on each side.
As of 2014, improvements in the parish continue. In a bid to improve the quality of life, the government aims to provide a safer and more vibrant environment for the locals, complete with access to nature and its gifts, such as South Wimbledon flowers. This can be done by reducing the dominance of motor vehicles and increasing driver awareness, especially when entering a residential area.
